Students in 4th grade are beginning to learn the steps of the Engineering Process through STEM activities in class. This activity would allow the students the opportunity to build a Mars Rover and explore the important parts that are needed to make a mission successful. The students will research how many prototypes and changes have been made to the different Rovers. The teacher and students will look at each step of the Engineering Process through the research and the building of the Rovers. The students will also look at the changes made between the Mars Rovers, Curiosity and Perseverance. Students will also look at how Solar Energy needs to be used more in our everyday lives since it is great enough to power a rover all over the surface of Mars. Students will research how solar energy is converted. They will replicate this process using the solar panels on the Mars Rovers they built. The students will collect data on how long the battery will last on the Rovers based on the amount of solar energy they collect.
