First grade is all about the reading. Setting the stage to become lovers of books. Children are more likely to want to read a book they can relate to. I also want to develop compassion for difference in a very diverse school. We are a school with a heavy military population. Many of these first graders will be in public school for the first time. I want a cozy classroom library that builds their love for books. My students will read daily out of real books not just online books.
