Imagine walking in on your first day of 3rd grade. You begin to unpack your brand new school supplies and then discover the 12 count of pencils is what you have to use for the entire year. The teacher doesn't have any pencils to spare. You brought pencils that are unsharpened but unfortunately there is no pencil sharpener in the classroom. You sigh and move along with your day. Your first day has already become a bad day. Time for a craft. You forgot to bring your scissors and the teacher doesn't have any to spare. No craft for you. When it's time for reading you realize there are very few books to choose from and even fewer that are your level. This could be my students' experience on the first day of school without your help. Students shouldn't have to worry about not having a pencil or not being able to find a book they can read and actually enjoy. With your help they don't have to. Students won't feel a rush of anxiety when they realize they forgot their pencil or other supplies. As a first year teacher who won't receive her first pay check until late September I am unable to provide the essentials for my classroom at the moment. This project will truly help create a sense of community in my classroom. A community takes care of each other and with your help I can do exactly that in my classroom.
