As a first year kindergarten teacher,  I am excited to begin sharing the love of reading with my students.  When I was a young child,  I simply couldn't wait for my teacher to read books aloud.  I'd sit at the edge of my seat waiting to hear what happened next in each story. The time I spent with books helped to transform my life and sparked my imagination. I want to create a similar experience for my students. Motivation is one of the keys to promoting a love of literacy in children. One of the best resources for creating that motivation is providing a classroom library filled with books that match my students’ interest level and reading level. They should be surrounded by titles that reflect the lives of themselves as well as their classmates. When students find titles with characters that look like them and families that resemble their own or their neighbors, their interest level increases. Making these connections also increases student comprehension. Another way to promote a love of books is through read alouds. Students' interests are piqued when I read books aloud and insert new voices to go along with the characters. Reading aloud builds many important foundational skills, introduces vocabulary, provides a model of fluent, expressive reading, and will help students recognize what reading for pleasure is all about.
