More than half of my students are Latino and the rest African-American. They are mostly second language earners. Their family income qualifies all of them to Title 1 grants. They live in low income neighborhoods characterized by drugs, alcoholism, and gangs. As a result, many of my students perform below grade level and suffer from low self-esteem and often become easy targets for bullies. They must learn to combat these negative influences.
