My students need to get a simple $15 calculator to use in my class. Even though everything can be done without one, they really need to learn to use a calculator for some math concepts that are too lengthy to do by hand. The ACT allows calculators and is a timed test. Students who have the calculator skills that they will use daily in geometry will likely get through more of the math problems accurately on the ACT. It doesn’t matter that I put this $15 calculator on the supply list in my syllabus; only a small fraction of students come to class each day prepared with one.
