In High School Biology student learning is based around the integration of all units or topics that are set forth in the Next Generation Science Standards. When we learn about ecology we also learn about energy transfer, natural selection, climate change, biomes, animal behavior and the interactions between animals, plants, fungi and bacteria. We build food webs of the African Savannah, Tiaga (Yellowstone), Tropical rainforest in our Biology classes and several marine environments in our Marine Science classes. A color printer would give us the opportunity to print out color pictures of the organisms that live in these ecosystems. Currently I have made food web cards in black and white and sometimes students can not discern a tree from a shrub, a vole from a mouse as the quality of the cards is not acceptable. Imagine using specimen cards with colored flowers, animals with camouflaged coats, and fish with their particular shading!
