Vermont has a reputation for lacking diversity. I believe this statement is true however, Vermont’s refugee resettlement program has given homes to 8,000 refugees from Africa, Asia, and Europe. In some schools, the number of students speaking English as a second language are as high as 80%. However, these students often lack a voice or mirror in their education. Libraries, lessons, and teachers do not reflect the diverse student population. My school lies in a rural area of Vermont that is majority white but diversity is much more than race and the lack there of only heightens the need for it’s presence in education. I plan to fill my library with books that reflect diverse families structures, economic status, beliefs, and historical figures in order to teach our young to welcome and celebrate our differences.
