Graphic novels allow for the integration of imagery in text and allow students visuals that convey a sense of time and motion. This can lead to allowing students to better understand sequencing within the book. Graphic novels are fun for students to read. With more images and fewer full pages of text, they are accessible to struggling readers. In fact, studies have shown that the availability of Graphic Novels can increase students choosing other novels that are available to them. In my English and Social Studies classroom, I offer several hundred books for students to borrow and read both in class and at home. I recently asked my students what kinds of books they prefer and Graphic Novels and Manga featured high on the list. I am promoting reading for enjoyment and increased literacy in my classroom and books that are fun for the students to read will greatly assist this goal.
