My students leave second grade with a love of reading and it shows. I start out the year reading them some of my favorite books, just for fun, no work attached. Each week they pick a new book to keep in their desk to read, if they finish an assignment early. Students also can win books to keep for earning the most dojo points that day for being an active learner. The compliments that give me the most joy is when a parent says, "I couldn't believe it, he read that book you gave him the entire car ride to his Aunties" or " She's been reading those books you sent home every night before bed." The love of reading is so important in a child's education and as a life long learner.
