My students have never had a full-time counselor. My students have seen a part-time counselor only about 2-3 days a week in the past. When I started last September, I had very few resources to support my students with, and the resources that I did have were old and outdated. Many of my students have experienced first-hand trauma, generational trauma, poverty, and abuse. Due to the events over the last year, it is important, now more than ever, to support students in this ever-changing world. Your donation will help support students' social/emotional and academic learning to become better lifelong learners. In supporting PreK- 5th-grade elementary students, we are laying the foundation for academic and emotional learning students will carry with them for the rest of their lives. With some of the requested resources, I will be creating a grief box to help children visualize how grief feels. For example, we all have a grief button, and when grief first happens our ball of grief may feel extremely large. When this happens, our grief ball is constantly touching our grief button. As time goes on our ball may get smaller and smaller and it may still hit our grief button at times but it isn't as large as it once was. I also have requested small pots, seeds, and soil. I will use this to work towards teaching children self-care, i.e. what does the plant need in order to thrive and survive? In turn, what do we need to survive and thrive? Along with using this lesson to teach patience and compassion. My goal is to create an environment students feel comfortable coming to and creating and providing creative arts resources to support students with transition, grief, and loss, anxiety, depression, emotion regulation, self-esteem, and more!
