In August 2021, our students will 100% return to our campus in Houston, Texas. Many of them are returning to the wolfpack after the most traumatic experiences of their young lives after surviving a global pandemic this last year and a half. Many of them lost parents, grandparents, friends, and other loved ones. Some of them were COVID positive themselves over this last year and a half and fought for their own lives. Providing our students with texts with characters that look like them, talk like them, and who have survived like them, and enhancing that by providing flexible seating options to students will support them with student choice and voice in a warm and welcoming environment. Mahogany Books is a well-known literature distribution resource that connects authors of color and books with characters of color to young and young adult readers. Our community at KCMS is a high immigrant population and the books I have chosen will encourage our students to see the text as mirrors of themselves and their families, windows into the world for new experiences, and doors of opportunity to dream bigger. The flexible seating options are for guided practice and independent reading time. They will provide what I am calling the Starbucks-ish experience. Approximately 60% of our students remained virtual and attended school from home and in more instances than not, our virtual students out-performed our students at school during the pandemic. Students worked on their beds, bean bags, floor pillows and had their favorite stuffed animals and blankets near them for comfort during academic time. I want to bring the comfort of home to school. The alternate seating and reading spaces will help students make good choices, increase engagement, and add incentive to literacy classes.
