The use of magnetic letters is a daily activity in my classroom, especially during the Reading Block. In First Grade, there are many different ways to help students practice manipulating letters and sounds, and one of the best ways is to focus on CVC words. Any kind of word building will encourage students to say the word slowly and identify sounds individually which is an essential skill for phonological awareness. With the use of magnetic letters, my students will be able to learn how to build and read CVC words and sight words as well. This will allow them to improve their reading skills independently at their own grade level. My students will be able to recognize the letter sound correspondence on each word they build. Using magnetic letters is a way to turn a simple activity into an interactive one. I will have my students select a CVC word mat and identify the first picture on it. Next they will sound out the word and find the magnetic letters for the beginning, medial and final sounds. Students will then build the word by putting a letter in each box to spell the CVC word correctly. My students will enjoy working on hands on activities like the one I just described.
