Middle school students often struggle with phenomenon that are too small to be seen by the naked eye. One of these phenomena is atoms and how they form molecules that make all of the different materials around us. In the past we have used legos and other building blocks to represent atoms and molecules for the students but the students still had some misconceptions about how bonds were represented in these do-it-yourself models. I believe if students have access to these molecular models, there will be less misconceptions about how atoms combine and rearrange to make the vast variety of molecules in the universe. With these tools, my students will be better prepared for the scientific rigor they will be facing in high school.
