Students who learn by discovery are much more likely to retain the material. Learning collaboratively with a partner, group of three or four can help students meet this goal. These desks will help create an environment where students can learn in pairs, pods, or groups easily. It is the first step in creating a flexible seating classroom for my students. After the past year of social distancing and a general lack of human connection, it will be vital to help the students regain a sense of community within our classroom. Additionally, these new desks will help to create a more welcoming and open environment in a tight space. In the next year, the average class size will be increasing and these desks will actually save space by replacing desks with attached chairs. (I measured it, each new desk will save about 1-floor tile.)
