This being my first year teaching first grade, I need all the help I can get to stay organized. It is also our first year fully in-person during the COVID-19 pandemic. Shared supplies are not within protocol yet my students are often losing supplies inside their desks. Chair pockets would be incredibly helpful for each student to keep their individual supplies organized.
Our school is also currently 1:1 with Chromebooks, which is a boon to individualized and differentiated learning. However, each student does not have a headset and with 25 students, it can get very loud and distracting (especially during testing). A classroom set of headphones would make our intervention and digital learning time run smoother, with less distractions. This item would be kept in the aforementioned chair pockets.
Our classroom does allow students to sit at the carpet at certain times throughout the day. Individual clipboards would make it easier for students to work on their writing at the carpet, making small group and grammar instruction run smoother. These supplies would also be kept in each student's seat pocket.
Finally, a student mailbox system would aid in maintaining separation between supplies, including any paperwork turned in during the school day. This system would ensure that all papers are only handled by myself and each individual student, providing an additional measure in the classroom. It would also provide useful when students are temporarily virtual due to quarantine. All work can be held in their individual mailbox waiting for them to return.
