Representation matters to our students of diverse backgrounds. As a society, we’re well aware of the lack of representation in the media and in professional settings of people from marginalized communities. For this incoming school year, I want to create a welcoming, safe, and culturally relevant classroom where my students can feel themselves reflected and valued. I’m asking for help in purchasing culturally diverse posters and texts that showcase famous and inspirational people from all cultural backgrounds so that my students can walk in and see themselves and get inspired by individuals that they can identify with. They are in charge of the trajectory of their life, but I know there are individuals in the past and present that have provided a road map in which they can learn and grow from.
