Throughout middle school science, we emphasize the idea that matter and energy are conserved as they flow through the environment. Composting is an essential example of this phenomenon! Having a compost system in my classroom would allow students to observe and participate in the decomposition and recycling of energy and matter. Composting is also a hands-on way for students to see their waste and how it is transformed in the environment. It is critical for students to see how a process such as composting can contribute to a more sustainable society. Many of my students live in apartments and do not realize that composting is accessible to them. Please help me bring the incredible phenomenon of composting to my classroom!
