I teach a first-grade classroom. I provide a significant chunk of my daily instruction to the whole class. Currently, my students are seated on individual desk chairs in rows of 5. ​I am looking for a way to build classroom community and a safe, caring, comfortable learning environment for all of my students. This year, more than ever, students need social-emotional learning and a chance to collaborate with other students and the teacher. The classroom carpet will be a bright, comfortable, engaging, and shared learning space for students and the teacher. I will introduce, model, and teach new concepts during carpet time. Students will be engaged in storytime; they will get an opportunity to share and collaborate with their peers. Every day we can gather around to learn something new and explore it together. It will be one special place where everyone feels welcome, and everyone knows that they have their own space in the classroom! The carpet will foster learning and creativity.
