An ice machine is essential to high school athletics. It is used to cool drinking water to help maintain proper hydration, decrease pain caused by scrapes and bruises, reduce inflammation from acute injuries and helps with general soreness from athletic participation that if left untreated could cause overuse injuries. On top of all of that, it is crucial to have easy access to ice on a daily basis during the hot months to prevent and treat athletes who are suffering from heat related illness. Athletic deaths from heat stroke are 100% preventable as long as they are treated properly with immediate cooling, which can be readily available to the Athletic Trainer with an ice machine.
