My third grade students are brilliant, engaged learners who thoroughly enjoy reading. They thrive when reading chapter books and making connections to their real-life situations. These students come from a low-middle class neighborhood that is being hit hard by the economy. Having access to extensive texts is simply not possible for many of the students in my class. I am currently teaching students with special needs, and I believe any form of reading that can be engaging, such as reading from a chapter book (which they see all around them) will push them to continue to strive to do their best.
