No matter the grade level using manipulatives brings a lesson to life and increases a student's understanding in a variety of ways. Math is more than just numbers on paper. Using fraction circles, dice and cubes make even the most difficult concept more concrete and it becomes accessible to all learners. Manipulatives are the best way to get students invested in a lesson and it is a great way to differentiate a concept for your students that may be struggling. In my classroom, I will use the manipulatives to introduce concepts concretely and I will also use them in small groups. My classroom is made up of students with a variety of different academic strengths. From the most advanced learner to the most struggling math student using a manipulative enhances the understanding. With some students entering the classroom after an extended period of distance learning due to covid, being able to engage students and bring them up to speed is going to be more important now than ever.
