I believe it is important to have a classroom library with books representing a wide variety of backgrounds, beliefs, and cultures. I am requesting books that teach about Asian culture and/or that include Asian characters. Because my students are learning Mandarin, I want them to have access to more books that represent Chinese culture and characters. My students will read these books to gain greater understand of Asian culture and characters. When I started working with my dual language immersion students, I realized that many of the books in my classroom did not have characters of Asian descent. I am working to remedy this problem by providing my students with books that will bring more diversity to our classroom library.
