My students live in the capital city of Minnesota. They experience first hand the difficult reality of poverty. Most live with one parent who works yet cannot afford a home or an apartment. They often live with relatives for a time, then move to a shelter. The parent then tries to make it on her own, but often ends up back in a shelter. The places in which they stay do not have stimulating materials for the hungry, inquisitive mind of a child in Kindergarten. And my students love stimulating materials! (Don't we all!) My students also love school. And despite the difficulties they endure everyday, they love to learn.
