My school has a strong focus on SEL, and in my Freshman Seminar class each morning, we practice different strategies for keeping us grounded and collected for the remainder of our day. Alongside following the School-Connect SEL program in this class, I consistently try to find ways that students can feel more relaxed and and prepared to tackle their school work, jobs, sports, friend-drama, family challenges etc.
I have seen a significant decrease in students' mental health and well-being this year, so my main goal for this project is to continue to build a space in my classroom that helps calm my students down when they are anxious or overwhelmed. My kids spend a lot of time reading, so I would like to grow my flexible seating options in hope that they can feel more comfortable and "at home" here. I would also like to purchase stress relievers/fidgets for students who have problems staying focused, and to be used as a PBIS incentive. Lastly, I would like to have each class period vote on a certain inspirational poster, object, or decoration of some sort that they think represents their class. I feel like it would really help students take more ownership and pride in this space, if they knew they were able to have a say in what went in it :).
This project will help students excel academically, socially, and emotionally. Specifically, by creating a more comfortable space for students to learn, it will allow them to focus more on content, while minimizing and learning to better control everyday distractions.
