As a librarian, I know the impact reading has on children. As a person of color, I know the impact representation has on children. As a teacher, I want to highlight who my students are and provide them with a classroom collection of books celebrating them and the diversity surrounding them. One of our BRIGHT values at KIPP Explore is "imagine." My students deserve a classroom library filled with titles they can visualize themselves in and that they can read freely. With this project, my hope is to foster an enthusiasm for reading and provide a collection that inspires them to consider how they view themselves and the world around them. I have curated a list of books that I would like to integrate into my classroom library for the 2021-2022 school year. Titles on the list include books in Spanish, bilingual books (English/Spanish), books featuring Black and Brown characters, and social emotional learning books. Most of these titles are hardback formatted, which ensures a lengthy self life.
