Last year I wanted to give my students more hands-on learning that would still work with social distancing. I used my own money to purchase various flashcards for my students. It turned out to be amazing. They would use them as I expected, quizzing each other, but their creativity opened so many new uses. One student came up with the idea to use each of the Pooh Bear sight word cards to come up with a story. Each student had to add to the story with whatever card they grabbed. It was also great because I just changed careers and this was my first year teaching after going through an ARL program. When I was overwhelmed and unsure how to get my students working independently so that I could do small groups, those math and ELA cards were lifesavers. This year I wanted to expand on this experience. Since we no longer have to socially distance ourselves, I decided to try some more interactive activities. I purchased little ELA and math puzzles and some dry erase CVC word cards and they are a major success. The kids are engaged with learning, working independently, and figuring out how to work together. After the craziness of last year, I noticed my students are having some issues navigating how to work with others. Since they spent their first year of school hybrid or full distance, their social skills took a hit. These puzzles and cards are helping them figure out how to share and work with peers. I also included lower-level books for my students. There are a number who are reading below grade level and I need to build their confidence and love of reading.
