Students today are generally not interested in reading academic material. Reading is not their "favorite" subject. As teachers, we have to find ways to engage our students in authentic methods. Reader's skills in high school, and everywhere, differ greatly. I try to find alternatives to "just reading" the material that needs to be covered. Students have come to expect to be entertained through social media, and video games. Teachers have to incorporate that same type of "entertainment" in their classroom in order to better engage their students. Teachers also need to make the lessons authentic and relatable. I believe using Listenwise as a tool would be beneficial to my students. Listening is an important skill for anyone to use throughout their life. The podcasts are generally short to keep the attention spans of teenagers, and the content is real-world relatable. A student's reading ability is taken out of the equation to understanding and allows the struggling reader to feel more confident as they learn material and vocabulary.
