When students come to me they need to regroup before they are able to re-enter the classroom because they are unable to learn with whatever current circumstance they have going on in their little lives. When they enter my classroom but aren't ready to talk, they can take a seat in a space designed to help calm down: area rugs, pillows, magnetic tiles, seat cushions, etc. All of it is designed to make them feel at ease. Also, there will be a cozy canopy den created for children to take a nap. Far too often we have students who are not getting enough sleep at home due to traumatic circumstances, so sometimes they can catch a brief nap so they can recharge and rejoin their classmates! My students may not have the best home lives, but my job is to make them feel at ease, loved, and comfortable so they are capable of going back into the classroom and absorbing all the information their teachers have to offer! I provide this by giving them a calm and safe space in which to collect themselves. Once they are able, we talk about what they can do to help their own situation and work out a plan to make their day better. In addition to making a comfy space on the floor where they can calm down, relax, nap, and even chat, there are many bulletin boards around my room to display school information, counseling information, artwork from the students, and resources for parents. We have many activities that my students and I work on together to help them open up, from markers and artwork to board games and toys - anything to help make them feel at ease. With the help of these products, I can create the counselor's corner I know my students will love and appreciate!
