Making the classroom warm, inviting, and safe is conducive to achieve successful learning. Often times, materials are handed down from teacher to teacher, and they aren't always age-appropriate (i.e. alphabet rugs for high school students). Although grateful for filling the classroom with bright colors and pictures gives those who enter joy, it often makes the students feel childlike despite being in their teenage years. Giving my students age appropriate school furniture will help them feel more comfortable in a classroom. Just like your home, adding appropriate furniture and decorations into the classroom creates a feeling of comfort. Students spend a lot of time in the classroom, so why not make it feel like home?
