Brightly colored classrooms create too much stimuli for students who struggle with stress, attention, concentration, hyperactivity and experience with trauma. When a student is stressed or anxious, maladaptive coping skills are triggered which results in behavior issues in class. The job of the classroom is to silently create the right atmosphere for learning to occur and to provide a calming space to use coping skills when a student is stressed or anxious. A therapeutic classroom that is calming and nurturing allows students' brains to remain calm and stable enough to learn. Neutral colors like brown and beige are calming. Fluffy rugs are a sensory sensation that encourages relaxation. Using lamps and turning off the main ceiling lights allows students to focus on their work and concentrate. Giving students the option to remove their shoes allows students to relax when paired with a fluffy rug.
