In our school and community, it seems that school materials are hard to come by. Often students, especially middle school students, come to us unorganized, unprepared, or unable to purchase the materials that help them be successful. This is of no fault of their own, but impacts their learning in so many ways. Part of teaching Jr. High kiddos is modeling and showing what responsibility, organization, and consistency looks like. They don't come to us as little adults ready to take on every single responsibility- it's something that's taught day in and day out.
These materials help aid us in teaching the foundations of good learning which includes organization and all that's necessary to keep up with what's required for each class. The folders/file system plays a big part in the organization of their work and the ability to reference past material by having access to it. It gives them a chance to practice responsibility and the opportunity to take ownership of their learning.
Though these materials may seem mundane -that's because they are. Teaching is not always flashing lights and glitter (though those things are way more entertaining) but rather the practical things that keep us organized and ready to learn with as little confusion and as much structure as possible.
