My students have been greatly affected by the national discussions on race. Having a novel, based on a true history, by a modern author will go a long way towards helping them understand past injustices, and will give us a discussion point for continuing the dialogue. I am asking for copies of The Nickel Boys so my students will be able to take the books home to read. The Pulitzer-prize-winning novel is based on a true story of a student detention center where black students faced violence and injustice. Living in a mainly white suburb, my students would like more understanding of the kind of injustice and racism Black Americans faced in the past and continue to face today. This novel will give us lots to discuss.
