My students will need graphing calculators in order to complete assignments, fully understand new topics, and give them the calculator skills that they need to be successful on state-mandated tests. There are certain activities we do in class that cannot be completed without a graphing calculator. Our school has some older calculators that students can check out for the year, but we don't have enough for all of the students who need them. Some parents are able to purchase a graphing calculator for their students, but for too many families that is a school supply that is out of their budget. We use these calculators daily in my Algebra 1, Geometry, and IB Math Studies classes. When students do not have their own graphing calculator, this impedes their progress. Many of my students are struggling in math before they come into the classroom, but with the right tools (in this case, graphing calculators) my students can start to realize that they are mathematicians who can succeed.
