I have seen the benefit of students using a slant board first hand. It greatly improves their ability to write and access writing. I have seen non-writers be able to write their alphabet within a few months of using a slant board. Slant boards are an essential tool for students who need occupational therapy to begin writing. These tools are a one time purchase and will help students for countless years to come, providing an intervention that will allow hundreds of students to access writing within my teaching career.
