These materials are books that feature black characters, written by black authors. All too often, students only see white characters by white authors. This collection of books will help my black and brown students see themselves in literature, which will increase reading engagement and connection. It will also help my white students see other kinds of people in literature, creating understanding and value for others. It is important for students to see themselves in print, especially when they have the chance to learn and talk and engage with the text. There are three books that I have requested 5 copies of: Long Way Down, Brown Girl Dreaming, and The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind. These books will be literature circle options so students can study and discuss diverse literature along side the canonical works that my school already offers.
