We would like to purchase a school set of Jumbie Jams to enrich our music program. Jumbie Jams are elementary student sized steel drums. Both music teachers at our school will be able to use them with multiple grade levels. The 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students will participate in an instrument unit based around the steel drums. The students will learn the history behind the steel drum and styles of music typically played on the steel drum, proper techniques for playing the steel drum, and culturally relevant music to play on the steel drum. At the conclusion of the unit, interested students will have the opportunity to join a before school ensemble to further improve their skills. We are working on other grants to help us get a class set of 12 steel drums. 12 steel drums will allow us to have a 2:1 student to drum ratio in most of our classes. This grant will help us earn enough money for 4 of the 12 steel drums!
