Our 7th-grade team has chosen the theme, "Taking Flight in 7th Grade." Our entire year will have an aviation theme with each of the content teachers developing curriculum, field trips, and guest speakers build around the flight theme.
Halfway to Harmony is the first of four books we will read this year and is the book I have chosen for the first nine weeks. The theme of the book is "adventure is possible when you change how you see the world" and my students need to see this reality. The novel is relatable as it contains characters who are about the same age.
This novel will be the first step in providing literary diversity and link with our aviation theme (one of the characters has a hot air balloon). I will use this novel as the students' textbook. We will be studying grammar and mechanics, and we will use this book in all of our classwork and examples. We will have rich classroom discussions about the characters and connect projects with the setting (Harmony, Georgia) which is similar to the area my students live in.
I am requesting 30 copies of the book so I have a classroom set. Each student will be able to use the book during his/her class period.
