This book has been described as "a brilliant and endlessly appealing explanation of calculus—how it works and why it makes our lives immeasurably better." Students get to relate to math in the world around them. Calculus can be a very abstract subject and therefore difficult for first time learners. With a preview of how calculus makes ultra sounds work and how it helped the treatment of AIDS, students can make meaning of their learning before the school year starts. Instead of completing a summer packet, students will have the chance to internalize WHY their learning is important. This is very valuable for all students but especially those on the precipice of transitioning to college.
