Developing strong Social Emotional skills is just as important for students' future success as Reading and Math, but is an area that is often over-looked in the traditional Kindergarten curriculum. Teaching these valuable characteristics in a developmentally appropriate way is often difficult, especially when considering the wide variety of cultural and social economic backgrounds that make learning different for every student, but kindergarteners love listening to read-alouds. Author Julia Cook has written many stories that are an engaging and child-friendly way for children to identify and develop their budding social and emotional skills. Adding these books to my classroom library will allow me to address specific situations and needs as they occur in real time. For example, when students are faced with a challenging concept in their schoolwork, Cook's book on persevering would serve as an important discussion and learning tool. Thank you for considering helping me provide a developmentally appropriate and engaging way to build my students social emotional skills.
