Many of my students read and write below grade level. As such, they struggle with testing and experience severe test anxiety. To help with this, our classroom is test-free for routine assessments! As an alternative, I have students produce a research poster at the end of a unit. The students research a relevant topic and this allows for reflection on what they have learnt in a creative and most importantly, less stressful way! Also, posters are an effective tool for measuring content understanding, as well as: teamwork, writing, developing procedures, problem solving, summarizing, public speaking, and citing sources. I am a keen reader myself and that is something I want to impart on to my students. I frequently set class reading challenges and I ensure that fun rewards await those who can conquer the challenge! Most importantly, I just want the students to feel safe and comfortable in my class.
