The project is meant to provide enough books for students to take back and forth between home and school. They will be able to accomplish more reading if allowed to take the books home. Generally, schools rely on single class sets. We begin the school year with a fiction unit. Using novels for book clubs allows students to work together and hold each other accountable for reading. They also stop seeing novels as a burden put on them by the school and, instead, begin seeing reading as a social event. They become inspired to read more.
