The materials and items I am requesting are critical in providing a learning environment for students with autism and other significant disabilities. Students with significant disabilities can often have both hyper-sensitive and hypo-sensitive needs. These include sights, sounds, smells, tastes, touch, and balance. When a student displays these needs, it is difficult for learning to occur. My students need a sensory-friendly space to meet their individual needs. Sensory rooms support language development, cognitive growth, motor skills, problem-solving skills, and social interactions. They increase concentration and help relieve anxiety or overstimulation. The items provide a break and provide an experience to relate to textures, lights, and sounds. Sensory rooms trigger a child's inclination for and ability to complete more complex tasks. Students return to their learning environments prepared for learning and social interactions.
