Over the last year, many students have not engaged in activities outside the walls of their homes or schools. It is time we start incorporating sports into our recesses. Individual and team sports can help children with hand-eye coordination, focus, self-esteem and social emotional learning. While my school has some recess equipment, we lack the storage and organizational systems to give kids fair access to the items. By creating school based equipment carts, students will be able to check out and use balls anytime during outdoor activities. Students will learn how to shoot basketballs, throw footballs, skip rope, and most importantly how to play together. All students should have the opportunity to play with a variety of tools for learning. Incorporating sports will support brain growth. This will encourage a healthier lifestyle and will benefit the classroom environment by letting kids have fun and burn off extra energy during recess leaving them ready to learn. Recess games support the SEL competencies of : Self-Awareness Self-Management Social Awareness Relational Skills and Responsible Decision Making The recess activities will also support the NVACS PE standards Safety (2.5.3), Engaging in Physical Activity (3.5.1), and Demonstrating healthy activity patterns (3.5.2).
