In theatre, every production starts with a script. From the script comes the infinite design ideas for sets, lights, sounds, and costumes. While we have learned about using software to work on design inspiration, concepts, and renderings, trying to build scenery or hang lights while looking off of a computer doesnt really work because of screens going to sleep, not being able to write changes or notes right on project, and having to have a charger on standby or plugged in means that we have limited places to work by (because the charger is only so long) which has also created some tripping hazards which is very undesirable in a working scene shop or on the stage. Having a printer, means we can just print those documents off quick and then move on to the next step rather than having to wait for me to be able to make a trip to the school copy room which sometimes doesn't happen until the next day, preventing students projects from moving forward. Another thing I have noticed this year of distance and asynchronous learning and trying to do everything on their laptops and laptops not working, or not having a charger, is that when I ask students if they want a paper copy most of them raise their hands for a paper copy (especially for scripts, being able to highlight and write cues and notes in the margins is essential and on a computer it is just a bunch of extra steps that leads to dead computers and "I dont have a charger" woes. I may be a little "old fashioned" by wanting paper copies of certain things but a paper and pen(cil) have never failed me! My laptop has.
