Flexible seating has so many benefits, especially in an early childhood classroom! Children need to move, and wobble stools allow children to move in a productive way while still staying within classroom limits. Wobble stools allow students to wobble, rock, lean, or stand which increases oxygen and blood flow to their brains. This, in turn, helps keep them alert and focused. Wobble stools also provide students with sensory input. This type of stimulation helps children focus and better process information. Additionally, wobble stools work to maximize student attention and promote learning. It is estimated you get 3-5 minutes of attention per year of life in PERFECT conditions (no distractions, no friends, no games, no nothing). By building in "wiggle room," I can maximize instructional time as well as student potential. I have already seen the benefits of flexible seating/wobble stools in my classroom. I was able to purchase 6 wobble stools for my small group table earlier this year and they have been a game-changer. Students are more attentive and able to learn for longer. The wobble stools allow their wiggles to become a part of what we are doing instead of a hindrance to the task at hand. I have also used the wobble stools during our classroom morning meeting time. Not only do the wobble stools allow more room on the rug, but they allow students who struggle sitting still to move appropriately while still being part of the whole group learning experience.
