Project 212 is our schools STEAM Initiative, started in 2019 by several dedicated teachers and scholars. As S.L. Parker explains, ““At 211 degrees, water is hot. At 212 degrees, it boils. And with boiling water, comes steam. And with steam, you can power a train.” We are envisioning a comprehensive STEAM program that is truly transformative for our school, one that metaphorically moves us from water to STEAM. Our Project 212 will not just improve our school. It will move us to the next level, a completely different state of being, one that is immersive for all scholars and permeates all aspects of our school experience. One goal of Project 212 is to enhance, both in quantity and quality, the lab experiences scholars have in their science classes. Our school has already begun to meet this goal through the purchase of various tools and technologies such as Vernier Probes and digital microscope. However, our school lacks a designated lab space where advanced investigations can occur safely. To rectify this we have begun making plans to create a dedicated space for science exploration. This space, "The STEM Cell", will be an ever changing space that can be used to facilitate scholar-led inquiry both in and out of class. Having lab tables that can be relocated as necessity dictates is a critical component of our fully functional STEM Cell. The incorporation of mobile lab tables will enable us to further enhance our lab experiences and open opportunities for more scholar-led investigations and problem-based learning. These tools will make the integration of hands-on science happen seamlessly, enabling scholars to gain deeper understanding of science content through in-depth investigation and application.
