Hatching chicks provides the students with a project that we incorporate in many different subjects during the Spring quarter. We talk about life cycles and pet responsibilities. The students get to keep an observation journal and use research tools to answer questions. This project uses math, reading, writing, and STEM. The kindergarten students buddy up with our 5th-grade students to design, build and test their “nests” during our egg drop (breakfast eggs are used, no chicks are harmed during the experiment). Hatching chicks is a project they remember for a lifetime. I have been hatching in my classroom for the last 18 years. When I run into past students who are now in college, they always ask if we are still hatching chicks! Sadly, our hatch was tiny this year due to a malfunction with our incubator and turning trays. After doing some research and trying to have the incubator repaired, we have concluded it is time to replace it.
