I am proud to be part of a school community that teaches Social Emotional Learning. At the young age of 5, my students are learning to recognize their emotions, learn to express their feelings, and how to regulate them. They check in each morning by telling how they feel and record them in their special notebooks. They learn how to cope when they are feeling sadness or anger. They learn how to use their happiness and calmness to be productive and social. Connecting to their feelings and emotions fosters compassion and kindness in my sweet little Kindergarten students. One component of the Program my school uses includes Class Dojo. Children love to earn points for being successful in the categories that I choose. For example, "using kind words", "giving a compliment", "showing responsibility" Children are learning to feel good about being kind. I love to give children the opportunity to pick a prize after earning a certain amount of points. The incentive items I chose will bring smiles to my students' faces! All children participate and all children build their self-esteem. I can't think of a more important time to make certain that children are in touch with their own feelings as well as those around them.
