Our students are transitioning to the middle school as 5th graders. They are learning how to navigate a more structured building environment. Over the course of the year, they gradually have more and more middle school-like experiences. However, we still like them to participate in elementary school-like activities. Recess has been shown to improve focus and attention in children, provide a time to socialize, and learn valuable communication skills. Our students eagerly await the opportunity to enhance these skills daily. We have a number of English learners and often it's hard for them to communicate with the other students. Through play, they can communicate and laugh together. We have experienced years with recess and without, and have seen significant increase in class participation and fewer behavior problems when our students are able to engage in this outdoor privilege. During these unprecedented times, we would like to maintain some sense or normalcy for our enthusiastic students. They love to play all different kinds of games but especially outdoor games.
